At least four people were killed and 22 others injured after Russia launched a hypersonic missile strike on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, overnight on Friday, local authorities have confirmed.
According to officials, the attack sparked a fire in a residential building in the city, prompting emergency services to rush to the scene in the early hours of January 9, 2026. Rescue teams were still conducting search-and-rescue operations as authorities assessed the full extent of the damage.
Russia said the overnight assault was aimed at Ukraine’s infrastructure and involved the use of a hypersonic Oreshnik missile, France 24 reported. Hypersonic missiles travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5—more than five times the speed of sound—making them difficult to intercept.
The strike came amid heightened tensions, shortly after Moscow condemned a Western proposal to deploy peacekeeping forces to Ukraine following a potential ceasefire agreement.
Ukrainian officials said investigations were ongoing as emergency responders continued efforts to assist victims and secure affected areas.
