The University of Ibadan (UI) has been ranked Nigeria’s leading institution for the study of law and medicine in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject.

Findings from the THE website, reviewed on Saturday, show that UI secured the 301–400 band in law, alongside the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). Their placement puts Nigeria on the global map among 425 universities assessed worldwide for legal studies.

According to THE, the law rankings evaluate performance across key areas such as teaching quality, research output, international outlook, and subject-specific strengths including constitutional and administrative law, international law, corporate and commercial law, criminal justice, and legal theory.

Globally, Stanford University emerged as the top-ranked institution for law, particularly for teaching excellence.

In medicine and health sciences, UI also led Nigerian universities, again placing in the 301–400 category. The University of Lagos followed in the 401–500 band.

Other Nigerian institutions featured across various tiers: Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University Kano, the University of Benin, the University of Jos, and UNN were ranked in the 601–800 range. Babcock University, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the University of Ilorin appeared in the 801–1000 band, while Lagos State University and the University of Port Harcourt were listed in the 1001+ category.

THE explained that the 2026 medical and health rankings assessed universities across disciplines such as medicine, dentistry, nursing, and other health-related fields, using 18 performance indicators adapted from its overall world rankings methodology.

Oxford University topped the global medical and health rankings, recognised for excellence in teaching, research, and industry collaboration. In total, 1,230 universities from 102 countries and territories were evaluated for the 2026 edition.

The latest results further consolidate UI’s position as Nigeria’s most prominent institution in global subject-specific university rankings.
