The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have announced plans to stage a peaceful solidarity rally in Abuja on Tuesday, February 3, in support of workers in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

The decision was contained in a joint statement issued on Sunday by the NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah, and the TUC Secretary General, N. A. Toro. According to the statement, the rally will take place at the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) as a public show of solidarity with affected workers.

The labour centres said the rally was intended to reaffirm the principle that “an injury to one is an injury to all,” stressing that the Nigerian labour movement would not abandon its members. They added that details of convergence points and timing would be communicated to workers through their respective affiliates.

Both unions directed all affiliates and state councils within the Federal Capital Territory to ensure effective mobilisation and timely dissemination of information to members, noting that full participation in the lawful and peaceful action was expected.

The NLC and TUC described the ongoing struggle as justifiable, legitimate and necessary, pledging to sustain it until justice is done for the affected workers. They assured workers in the FCTA of their continued support, emphasizing that there would be no retreat or surrender.

“The labour movement stands firm, and no one should underestimate or undermine that resolve. To workers in the FCTA, we say you are not alone. We will not abandon you,” the statement read.

The unions also urged members of the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) to remain united and steadfast in defending their rights, describing the struggle as one rooted in justice, fairness and respect for labour rights.

Workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration began an indefinite strike on January 19 over unpaid salaries, promotion arrears and poor working conditions. In response, FCT authorities approached the National Industrial Court, describing the strike as illegal and seeking an order to restrain the unions and their members from continuing the action. The court subsequently ordered the workers to resume work.
