The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of his brother-in-law, Elder Essien Pius Ubeng, describing it as a personal loss.
Akpabio is expected to attend the burial ceremony of the late Elder Ubeng on Saturday in Ukana Ikot Ntuen, Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
In a condolence message he personally signed, the Senate President said he received news of Ubeng’s passing with shock, noting that their relationship went beyond family ties.
“I received the news of the death of Elder Hon. Pius Ubeng with a rude shock. He was not just an in-law; we shared a strong bond, making his death a personal loss to me,” he said.
Akpabio described the deceased as a devoted family man, respected community leader and committed Christian whose dedication to the church earned him the position of a lay preacher in the Methodist Church.
He also highlighted Ubeng’s record in public service, stating that as a commissioner in the civil service, he carried out his duties with remarkable efficiency and dedication. According to him, the late Ubeng’s passing has left a significant void both within the family and in the public sphere.
“While we mourn, we take solace in the fact that he lived a fulfilled life and left behind a legacy we will continue to uphold with pride,” Akpabio added.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and asked God to grant the family the strength to bear the loss.
