President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun from his position as Inspector-General of Police.

Senior presidential aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development on Tuesday. According to sources, the President directed Egbetokun to step aside during a meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

One aide simply stated, “Yes, Egbetokun is no longer the IG,” adding that an official statement would be released shortly. Another source disclosed that preparations were ongoing for a formal announcement.

Attempts to reach the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, for confirmation were unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent to him were not returned. Similarly, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, did not respond to inquiries.

Sources within the police hierarchy indicated that a successor may have been identified, though no official confirmation had been made as of press time. One senior officer revealed that Tunji Disu had been contacted in connection with the position, but noted that the police leadership was awaiting a formal announcement.

Egbetokun was appointed Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023, by President Bola Tinubu.

His tenure attracted public debate in 2024 after he attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 on September 4. However, his stay in office was extended following amendments to the Police Act, allowing him to remain in service beyond the retirement threshold.
