The Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has condemned the arrest of businesswoman Tracy Nicholas Ohiri and called for calm and dialogue in the dispute reportedly involving the Minister of Works, David Umahi.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding Ohiri’s arrest and stressed the need for strict adherence to the rule of law. She thanked Nigerians who spoke out over the development, describing public vigilance as a vital component of democracy.
“I appreciate every Nigerian who stood up for Tracy Nicholas Ohiri in connection with her arrest involving the Minister of Works,” the senator said.
She maintained that no individual should face intimidation or coercion for speaking out, particularly on matters relating to alleged harassment or misconduct. As a lawmaker and advocate for women’s rights, she said she unequivocally opposes any attempt to silence individuals through force or threats.
Akpoti-Uduaghan urged both parties to embrace dialogue and pursue a peaceful resolution. She specifically appealed to Umahi to engage Ohiri in good faith discussions aimed at resolving the dispute amicably.
The senator also reaffirmed her commitment to justice and due process, revealing plans to meet with both parties upon her return to Abuja to explore possible avenues for resolution.
The incident has continued to spark public debate, with many Nigerians calling for transparency, accountability, and respect for constitutional rights.
Reports indicate that after hours of tension at Wuse General Hospital in Abuja, officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service released Ohiri to enable her receive medical treatment. She was reportedly arrested following a directive linked to the minister after she demanded payment for the supply of gift items.
The situation reportedly led to a standoff involving armed correctional officers and a group of concerned citizens, activists, and social media influencers who had gathered at the hospital.
