World football governing body, FIFA, has officially named Democratic Republic of the Congo as Africa’s representative in the inter-confederation play-off tournament for the 2026 World Cup, effectively ending Nigeria’s hopes of securing a late qualification slot.

In a notice issued to journalists ahead of the competition, FIFA outlined the structure of the play-off tournament and confirmed the six participating nations.

DR Congo’s confirmation shuts the door on Nigeria’s protest following their defeat in the CAF play-offs in November 2025. The Nigeria Football Federation had challenged the outcome of the decisive tie, which ended 1-1 before Nigeria lost on penalties.

The NFF alleged that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the match and formally appealed to have the result overturned, seeking Nigeria’s reinstatement into the inter-confederation play-offs.

However, FIFA’s final list of qualified teams makes no provision for Nigeria.

In its statement, FIFA said the 2026 World Cup Play-Off Tournament will feature six teams competing for the final two spots at the global showpiece, which will be hosted across 16 cities in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

According to the governing body, the confirmed teams are Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname.

The play-off tournament is scheduled to kick off on March 26.
