The interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Nenadi Usman, has cautioned members and supporters to disregard anyone demanding payment for the party’s ongoing electronic membership registration, stressing that the process is completely free.
Usman issued the warning on Monday in Abuja during the official launch of the party’s e-registration portal. The event was attended by stakeholders from the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria.
Speaking with journalists, the LP chairman explained that the digital registration exercise is aimed at simplifying membership documentation and preparing the party for its forthcoming congresses and national convention.
She emphasised that Nigerians are not required to pay any fee to register.
According to her, anyone requesting money for the process should be regarded as fraudulent. She, however, clarified that members may choose to pay their party dues through a separate link on the portal, but such payments are not a requirement for registration.
The initiative comes as the party moves to rebuild and reorganise its structures across the country following leadership disputes that have persisted since the 2023 general elections.
Usman said the e-registration would create a credible and transparent membership database to guide the party’s internal elections. The process, she noted, will lead to congresses at ward, state and zonal levels before a national convention is held to elect members of the party’s National Working Committee.
She added that despite criticism and internal disagreements, the party’s leadership remains focused on strengthening its structures ahead of future elections.
Also speaking, veteran trade unionist and member of the party’s Board of Trustees, Lawson Osagie, dismissed claims of factionalisation within the party.
Osagie said the party’s organs were operating in line with the ruling of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and the regulations of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
He explained that the party’s National Caretaker Committee had been tasked with overseeing the process leading to congresses and a national convention that will usher in a new substantive leadership.
According to him, the interim leadership is committed to producing a credible and verifiable membership register that will guide the party’s internal democratic process.
