The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission has announced December 29, 2026, as the new date for the conduct of local government elections across the state’s 33 local government areas.
The commission’s chairman, Babatunde Adeniyi, made the announcement in a statement issued in Ibadan on Tuesday.
According to the statement dated March 4, 2026, the adjustment became necessary following a change in the timetable for the presidential and National Assembly elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The elections were moved from February 20, 2027, to January 16, 2027 — a date previously fixed by the Oyo electoral body for the council polls.
Adeniyi explained that the overlap in dates created operational and logistical challenges, prompting the commission to reschedule the local government elections.
He stated that the polls will now hold on Tuesday, December 29, 2026, between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
The commission said the decision was taken after consultations to avoid congestion in electoral activities, ensure effective deployment of security personnel, and encourage voter participation.
Adeniyi also noted that election campaigns by political parties will end at midnight on December 28, 2026. He added that rerun elections, if required, will be conducted on January 5, 2027.
He urged political parties, security agencies, and other stakeholders to continue preparations in line with the revised schedule, assuring that the commission remains committed to conducting a peaceful, transparent, and credible election in the state.
