The governments of United Kingdom and Nigeria have sealed a set of agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation on migration, border security, and business travel.

The deals, signed in the UK, comprise three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), alongside two Statements of Intent—one targeting collaboration on organised immigration crime and border management, and another focused on expanding business visa access for UK firms operating in Nigeria.

Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, signed two of the MoUs on Wednesday and completed the third on Thursday on behalf of the Federal Government.

Speaking after the signing, Tunji-Ojo said the agreements reflect Nigeria’s commitment to a migration system that is transparent and aligned with both national priorities and international standards. He described the partnership as a shared effort to build a system that is safe, orderly, and beneficial to both countries.

The minister added that the government is focused on achieving measurable results within a year, expressing hope that the framework could serve as a model for future bilateral agreements.

He also praised the existing collaboration with the UK Home Office, noting that it demonstrates the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to global partnerships. According to him, Nigeria remains dedicated to protecting its citizens while ensuring that those who abuse migration pathways or engage in criminal activities are brought to justice.

On the expansion of business visas, Tunji-Ojo said the initiative would boost economic growth, particularly as Nigeria pursues ongoing reforms. He added that achieving the country’s ambition of building a trillion-dollar economy would require removing trade barriers, including those linked to irregular migration.

“I want to assure you that Nigeria is open to vast opportunities for growth and development,” he said, pledging swift implementation of the agreements.

Also speaking, UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described Nigeria as a vital partner, noting that the country stands out in the UK’s bilateral engagements due to the scope of the agreement.

She said both nations share a common vision for cooperation and expressed appreciation for the strengthened relationship.

UK Trade Envoy Florence Eshalomi added that expanding business visa access would deliver clear economic benefits for both countries, further enhancing trade and investment ties.
