The Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) has confirmed the abduction of several worshippers during a Sunday service in Oro-Ago, located in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, following an attack by suspected bandits.
According to the church, eight congregants were taken during the invasion, including the wife of the presiding minister, identified as Mrs. Omole. The attackers reportedly stormed the church while worship was ongoing, causing panic as members fled for safety.
Security operatives later rescued three of the victims after tracking the assailants, while efforts continue to secure the release of those still in captivity.
In a statement issued by the ECWA District Church Council in Ilorin, the leadership described the incident as tragic and deeply disturbing, noting that it reflects a growing pattern of insecurity affecting churches and communities across the Kwara South Senatorial District.
The council lamented the increasing frequency of such attacks, despite repeated calls for stronger security presence in the region. It urged security agencies to adopt more proactive measures to prevent future incidents, rather than responding only after attacks occur.
The statement also expressed solidarity with the affected families and offered prayers for the safe return of the abducted members, voicing hope that they would soon be reunited with their loved ones.
Residents of the Oro-Ago community have expressed fear and concern following the attack, citing a recent rise in kidnappings and banditry across parts of Kwara South. Community members have called on authorities to urgently address the worsening security situation and ensure the safe rescue of the victims.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the armed assailants arrived unexpectedly and carried out the abduction without resistance, taking the victims to an unknown location. The incident has further heightened tension in the area, with locals demanding swift intervention from security agencies.
