Oyo State Governor, Oluseyi Makinde, has dismissed speculations about leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), affirming his continued loyalty and satisfaction with the party.
Speaking on Monday at a meeting with PDP stakeholders from all 33 local government areas held in Ibadan, the governor assured members that the party remains strong despite ongoing challenges.
Makinde expressed confidence in the PDP’s future, stressing that it will remain active and competitive in the 2027 general elections.
“Those predicting the collapse of the PDP are mistaken. The party will be on the ballot in 2027, presenting candidates for all elective positions from the state to the national level,” he said.
He called for unity within the party, urging leaders and stakeholders to set aside differences and adopt consensus-driven approaches in preparation for the elections. According to him, party leaders across various zones should organise meetings to resolve internal disputes and agree on workable arrangements.
Makinde also announced measures aimed at strengthening party cohesion, including granting automatic tickets to members of the National Assembly and some lawmakers in the Oyo State House of Assembly. He clarified that first-term state legislators would receive automatic tickets, while returning members would be considered based on existing agreements such as zoning and rotation.
The governor acknowledged the likelihood of a tough contest in 2027 but expressed optimism about the party’s chances of victory.
Describing the upcoming elections as crucial, Makinde said the stakes go beyond political power, emphasizing their importance for the future of democracy and generations to come.
“This is not just about 2027; it is about the future of democracy. Success requires effort and resilience. We are ready for the challenge, and we are confident of winning,” he added.
