Detectives from the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a man posing as a medical doctor following the death of a 35-year-old woman, Blessing Sunday Etim, during an illegal abortion. The suspect has been identified as Sunday Okon Akpan.

DSP Timfon John, the police spokesperson, told journalists on Thursday that the deceased worked under Akpan at the Full Life Medical Centre (FLMC) in Ikot Obio Odongo, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area. Police launched a search after receiving a distress report from the victim’s mother.
According to the statement, Akpan allegedly attempted to secretly move the victim’s body after the procedure, but was confronted by a co-tenant who raised the alarm. He reportedly abandoned the body and fled the scene.
Investigators discovered a premature fetus during their initial inspection. Further inquiry revealed that Akpan is not a licensed doctor or nurse but a community health practitioner, and that he had been performing unauthorized medical procedures at the clinic, which has since been abandoned.
The victim’s body has been preserved in a morgue for autopsy, while police continue their investigation into the incident. DSP John assured that more details would be released as they become available.
