The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced a new policy granting lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring from the ranks of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, Commandant-General, and above. The initiative, aimed at boosting officer welfare, received approval from President Bola Tinubu.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo revealed the development on Thursday during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, where he outlined the ministry’s achievements and reiterated its commitment to strengthening institutional capacity across all agencies.
In a statement issued by the National Public Relations Officer and Head of Corporate Services of the Federal Fire Service, DCF PO Abraham, the minister expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his continued support, noting that agencies under the Ministry of Interior are benefiting from the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Highlighting recent accomplishments, Tunji-Ojo said over 50,000 officers have been promoted in the last two years, clearing a long-standing backlog. He added that future promotions will be determined by a performance- and capacity-based system.
The minister also announced the development of new training manuals and the construction of a world-class Fire Academy, designed to match international standards such as the Arizona Fire Academy.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo further emphasized the importance of mental health in the workplace and assured officers of the ministry’s full support. He encouraged the Federal Fire Service to engage in private-sector partnerships to enhance service delivery, infrastructure development, and the modernization of firefighting operations in Nigeria.
