Former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke has made fresh revelations, claiming she handed over $9 billion (₦13.9 trillion) to Dauda Lawal Dare, now the Governor of Zamfara State, for safekeeping while he was Executive Director at First Bank Nigeria Plc.
Alison-Madueke, who served under former President Goodluck Jonathan and has been living in the United Kingdom to avoid prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), reportedly expressed her willingness to return to Nigeria to confess her role in alleged large-scale corruption during her tenure.
Speaking to journalists in London after a medical appointment, the embattled ex-minister—who disclosed she is battling stage two cancer—appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians for forgiveness.
“I am a born-again Christian and currently managing stage two cancer. Life is temporary. I admit that I misappropriated funds while serving as petroleum minister, and I seek forgiveness so I can return home and contribute positively,” the EFCC quoted her as saying in tears.
She further alleged that her relationship with Governor Dauda Lawal has soured, claiming he no longer takes her calls and has allegedly collaborated with UK police to place her under surveillance.
“My husband, family members, and Nigerian lawyer all knew about my relationship with Dauda Lawal. I entrusted him with over $9 billion. Unfortunately, he now ignores me and seems intent on taking the money after my death,” she said.
The EFCC has not confirmed whether negotiations are ongoing to facilitate her return to Nigeria.
