Authorities in Dallas, Texas, are investigating a deadly shooting at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office that left two detainees dead and another critically injured.
The incident happened early Wednesday morning at the ICE facility on the 8100 block of North Stemmons Freeway. According to Sky News, police believe the gunman acted as a sniper, firing several rounds from a nearby rooftop before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
ICE officials confirmed that the victims were being escorted into the building for processing and possible deportation when the shots were fired. No ICE personnel were injured.
Dallas police said they received an emergency call around 6:40 a.m. local time. Two of the victims were rushed to a hospital, but one was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency vehicles quickly surrounded the facility’s secure entry point as law enforcement locked down the area.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the fatalities in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“There was a shooting this morning at the Dallas @ICEgov Field Office. Details are still emerging but we can confirm there were multiple injuries and fatalities. The shooter is deceased by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. While we don’t know the motive yet, violence against ICE must stop. Please pray for the victims and their families.”
U.S. Vice President JD Vance also reacted, condemning what he called an “obsessive attack” on law enforcement. “I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families,” he posted.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton echoed those sentiments, vowing to “combat the alarming increase of targeted attacks against ICE and all law enforcement by evil, twisted individuals.”
Authorities have not released the identities of the victims or the shooter. Investigators are working to determine whether the detainees were deliberately targeted. A full media briefing is expected later in the day.
