A tragic shooting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, left one person dead and nine others injured on Sunday, authorities have confirmed.
Police identified the suspect as a 40-year-old man from Burton, Michigan, who was shot and killed during an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement inside the church.
Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye said hundreds of worshippers were present during the attack. The FBI has deployed about 100 agents to assist in collecting witness statements and investigating the case.
Authorities are executing a search warrant at the suspect’s home and reviewing his phone records to determine a motive for the attack.
The incident comes less than 24 hours after another mass shooting in Southport, North Carolina, where a gunman opened fire at a waterfront bar, killing three and injuring at least eight.
Sunday’s tragedy also coincided with a period of mourning for members of the LDS Church following the recent passing of President Russell M. Nelson, 101, who led the church since 2018.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, this marks at least the 324th mass shooting in the United States so far in 2025. CNN defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more people, excluding the shooter, are shot.
