The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the parade earlier scheduled to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Although no reason was given for the cancellation, the government stressed that the decision would not reduce the importance of the historic occasion.

“The Federal Government wishes to announce the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade previously slated for Wednesday, October 1. This decision does not in any way diminish the significance of the anniversary, and government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65 years of independence with pride and enthusiasm,” the statement read in part.

It further noted that all other programmes lined up for the celebration—tagged “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation”—would go on as planned.

The government expressed regret for any inconvenience the cancellation might cause, while calling on Nigerians, the diplomatic community, and invited guests to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda.

“The Federal Government appreciates the understanding and cooperation of Nigerians and urges all citizens to continue supporting the administration’s reforms to build a greater nation,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has already declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the country’s 65th Independence anniversary.
