The Special Assistant on Digital Media Strategy to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Demola Olarewaju, has said that a possible alliance between Atiku and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would present the most formidable opposition ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on the Mic On Podcast on Sunday, Olarewaju described a potential Atiku–Obi partnership as a “co-presidency” that would combine the experience of both leaders to deliver effective leadership for Nigerians.
“I think the best option is to have both of them on one ticket, so Nigerians can enjoy their combined leadership,” he stated.
Olarewaju also underscored the need for political structures that promote youth and women’s participation, noting that any credible party must allocate 35 to 50 percent of leadership positions to these groups.
He said Nigeria’s future depends on harnessing the creativity and energy of the younger generations — including Gen Z and Gen Alpha — to build a more inclusive and innovative political system.
The aide commended Atiku for his loyalty and consistency, recalling how he supported former President Goodluck Jonathan despite losing the 2011 PDP presidential primary.
“That’s who Atiku is — a team player who remains committed even after internal party contests,” he added.
According to Olarewaju, Atiku remains the strongest opposition figure for now but is open to stepping down for a younger candidate if the party’s primaries produce one.
“The most powerful opposition ticket for 2027 would be an Atiku–Obi combination. Their shared political ideals and experience make such a team both possible and formidable,” he said.
Since the 2023 presidential election, where Atiku and Obi contested separately, calls have grown for unity among opposition parties to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next polls.
