Israel and Hamas have reached a landmark agreement in Egypt for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all remaining hostages, marking a significant step toward ending a conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and caused a major humanitarian crisis.
Israeli government spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian confirmed that the final draft of the first phase of the deal was signed “this morning in Egypt by all parties.” She added that the plan clearly outlines the release of both living and deceased hostages within 72 hours, potentially by Monday.
“The ceasefire will take effect within 24 hours following a meeting of Israel’s security cabinet scheduled for 1400 GMT,” Bedrosian said. She explained that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will reposition according to agreed maps, after which the 72-hour window for the hostages’ return will begin. A full government meeting is scheduled for 1500 GMT to follow the security cabinet session.
News of the agreement sparked celebrations in Tel Aviv, where thousands gathered at Hostage Square, hopeful for the safe return of individuals held in Gaza over the past two years.
The agreement, facilitated with international involvement, represents a critical first phase in a broader effort to stabilize the region and bring an end to years of violence.
