In a high-stakes political gathering on Sunday, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike hosted an emergency meeting at his Abuja residence with top Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders from across the country. The focus? Samuel Anyanwu’s position as the party’s National Secretary—and Wike left no room for doubt about where he stands.
According to Wike, Anyanwu isn’t going anywhere.

The Minister pointed to a Supreme Court ruling affirming Sam Anyanwu as the legally recognized National Secretary of the PDP. He criticized ongoing efforts to remove Anyanwu from office and urged party members to respect the judicial process—and the party’s constitution.
“If there are those who want him out, they should wait for the party convention later this year,” Wike said firmly.

The controversy largely stems from Anyanwu’s decision not to step down as National Secretary while contesting the 2023 Imo State governorship election. Critics argue this violates internal party rules. But Wike offered a compelling counterargument, citing similar situations in the party’s history.

He referenced Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, who ran for office while still serving as the PDP state chairman. Kefas only resigned after clinching the governorship—yet no controversy followed.
Wike was clear: the PDP must follow its own constitution and avoid setting dangerous precedents.
“We cannot betray the principles laid down by our founding fathers,” he said. “Anything less is a disservice to the party.”
As the PDP gears up for what could be a turbulent convention season, one thing is clear: Wike is drawing a line in the sand—and he’s standing firmly behind Sam Anyanwu.
