A violent attack near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Anambra State has left multiple people dead and an unknown number kidnapped, following a deadly raid by unidentified gunmen.

The assailants reportedly stormed student lodges around the Total petrol station in Oko on the evening of Thursday, June 19, opening fire indiscriminately. Eyewitnesses, including students from the institution, captured the attack on video, showing two vehicles allegedly used by the attackers. The students, filming from inside their hostels, expressed fear and helplessness as gunshots rang out in the background.
Gruesome footage shared online shows several victims lying in pools of blood. While some were confirmed dead at the scene, others were seen severely injured and crying out in pain. However, the intensity of the gunfire prevented any immediate rescue or medical assistance, as the shooting reportedly lasted for hours.
Among those killed was a local barbecue vendor well known in the area. Unverified reports suggest that some lecturers may also be among those kidnapped, although authorities have yet to confirm this.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. However, sources allege it may be linked to rising tensions over a new security checkpoint set up by the Operation Udo Ga Achi security outfit near the Total filling station. This checkpoint was said to be one of several recently erected in the vicinity, which may have sparked unrest.
As of the time of filing this report, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and official statements from law enforcement or government agencies are still awaited.
