Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the National Assembly, has officially resigned from the Labour Party (LP) and declared allegiance to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which now operates as a coalition of opposition forces gearing up for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja shortly after a strategic meeting, Senator Kingibe confirmed her defection and expressed full commitment to the ADC platform.
“As a senator, I am fully committed to ADC,” she said. “However, as the representative of the FCT, I don’t expect you to just hand me a card,” she added, alluding to her yet-to-be-formalized membership while affirming her dedication to the coalition’s objectives.
Her move comes as opposition parties rally under a united banner to challenge the ruling party in the next elections. The ADC coalition is currently under the interim leadership of former Senate President David Mark, with a mandate to build party structures nationwide and prepare for the emergence of a substantive leadership.
In a show of solidarity, 37 ADC state chairmen and their FCT counterpart reiterated their support for the David Mark-led interim leadership as they intensify preparations for 2027.
Senator Kingibe’s defection is seen as a strategic move amid rising political tensions in the FCT, where power dynamics are expected to shift significantly ahead of the next polls.
