The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London hospital.

This announcement was made through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani. The holiday aligns with the seven-day national mourning period earlier declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who conveyed the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, said the public holiday is a mark of respect for President Buhari’s service and contributions to the nation’s development and democratic growth.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, integrity, and a strong commitment to national unity and progress. This public holiday gives Nigerians a moment to reflect on his legacy and the ideals he championed,” Tunji-Ojo stated.

He further urged citizens to honour the former President’s memory by fostering peace, patriotism, and unity across the country.

In line with the period of national mourning, the Federal Government has directed that all national flags fly at half-mast for seven days, starting Sunday, July 13, 2025.

The government also expressed its heartfelt condolences to President Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda, on Monday announced the burial arrangements for the late statesman. Speaking at a press briefing, Governor Radda disclosed that following consultations with the Buhari family and close associates in London, the former President’s remains would arrive in Katsina by noon on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

He added that the burial will take place in Daura, Buhari’s hometown, at 2:00 p.m. the same day.
