An Israeli airstrike on Gaza’s sole Catholic church, the Holy Family Church, has left several people wounded, including the parish priest, Father Gabriel Romanelli, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem confirmed on Thursday.

In an official statement, the Patriarchate said:

“The Holy Family Church in Gaza was struck this morning. Several individuals were injured, including the Parish Priest, Father Gabriel Romanelli. There are currently no confirmed fatalities, but the church suffered significant damage.”

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged the incident, stating on its official X account that it was reviewing the circumstances surrounding the strike.

“The IDF is aware of reports regarding damage to the Holy Family Church in Gaza City and casualties at the scene. The circumstances of the incident are under review,” the statement read.
“The IDF makes every feasible effort to prevent harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure, including religious sites, and regrets any damage caused.”

The attack has sparked international outrage, particularly from Italy, where both the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister publicly denounced the strike.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on X:

“Israeli raids on Gaza have also struck the Holy Family Church. These attacks on civilians that have persisted for months are unacceptable. No military objective justifies such actions.”

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also issued a strong rebuke:

“The Israeli Army’s attacks on civilians in Gaza are no longer tolerable. Today’s strike damaged the Church of the Holy Family — a serious offense against a Christian place of worship. I extend my full support to Father Romanelli, who was injured in the attack. It is time to stop and pursue peace.”

This strike on a religious sanctuary comes amid a broader Israeli military campaign in Gaza that has drawn mounting international criticism and calls for an immediate ceasefire.
