U.S. President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a vein-related condition, following recent concerns over visible swelling in his legs, the White House confirmed on Thursday.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the 79-year-old president underwent a full medical evaluation after observers noted swelling in his lower limbs and bruising on one hand during recent public appearances.

Leavitt revealed that the president’s doctors carried out “diagnostic vascular studies, including bilateral lower extremity venous Doppler ultrasounds,” which confirmed the condition.

Chronic venous insufficiency is a circulatory disorder in which weakened vein valves hinder blood from flowing properly from the legs to the heart, often resulting in leg swelling, cramping, or varicose veins. The condition is described as “common and benign,” particularly in adults over 70, and affects an estimated 150,000 Americans annually.

Despite the diagnosis, Leavitt stressed that President Trump remains in “good overall health.”
“There is no evidence of deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease,” she added, noting that all test results were within normal limits and the president’s heart and kidney functions are stable with no signs of systemic illness.

Addressing the bruising spotted on Trump’s hand, Leavitt explained it was “consistent with minor soft tissue irritation” due to frequent handshaking and regular aspirin intake, which is part of his cardiovascular care routine.

According to the White House, the president does not require surgery and will be treated with medication and regular monitoring.
