The Kano State Commissioner for Transport, Ibrahim Namadi, has asked the Federal High Court in Kano to relieve him of his role as surety for suspected drug trafficker, Sulaiman Aminu, popularly known as “Danwawu.”

In a formal application to the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court, Namadi cited “personal grounds” and a need to protect his “image and dignity as a public servant” as his reasons for stepping down from the suretyship.

“I hereby intend to withdraw as a surety of the above-mentioned person who is standing trial before this honourable court for the alleged offence,” Namadi stated in his letter, referring to the case marked FHC/KN/CR/93/2025: Federal Republic of Nigeria vs. Sulaiman Aminu.

Namadi had previously stood surety for Aminu following the court’s bail ruling on July 17, 2025. The conditions included a ₦3 million bail and one surety in the same sum — who must be a serving commissioner in the Kano State Executive Council. The court also mandated a deposit of ₦5 million to the Deputy Chief Registrar, to be kept in an interest-yielding account.

On July 18, Namadi swore an affidavit declaring his position as a serving commissioner and committed to producing the defendant in court throughout the trial.

“I undertake to abide by the bail conditions and promise to produce the Defendant on adjournment date(s) until the case is finally disposed of,” he had stated under oath.

Court records, including a notification filed under ‘Fulfilment of Bail Conditions,’ confirmed that the conditions had been met and approved.

However, Namadi’s abrupt withdrawal raises questions amid the gravity of the charges facing Aminu.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has described Aminu as a key player in a sprawling drug network operating across Kano and neighboring states. In a statement issued in May, NDLEA spokesperson Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari accused Aminu of fueling widespread drug abuse and insecurity.

The case remains ongoing.
