“Faith Isn’t a Cruise—It’s Combat”

“I’m going to die anyway, so I might as well enjoy life to the fullest!”

It’s no secret across the globe that many soldiers—and men in uniform generally—tend to be promiscuous. The reasons vary: women are often drawn to them, and the men themselves justify their choices with the reasoning that since they face death daily, they might as well indulge in as much pleasure as possible before their time is up.

This mindset, though worldly, poses a critical reflection for Christians. For in many ways, a Christian is a soldier too—engaged not in physical warfare but in a spiritual battle. This war isn’t against fellow humans but against unseen forces (Ephesians 6:12). And like earthly soldiers, Christians are also called to lay down their lives—sometimes literally—as martyrs for the sake of Christ.

Which brings us to some urgent questions:

1. Should a Christian also adopt the mindset:

“Since I could die anytime, I might as well enjoy life to the fullest and live my best life now”?

2. Or is the better path to live like a monk—denying all pleasures and separating completely from earthly enjoyment?

3. Or perhaps, is there a balanced, middle ground?

Let’s pause and first ask:

WHO IS A SOLDIER?

To understand what kind of mindset a Christian ought to have, we must examine what it truly means to be a soldier:

  1. A Soldier Lives Ready to Die for a Worthy Cause
The greatest requirement for being a soldier is the willingness to die—not just die, but die for something meaningful. This also means pleasing their commanding officer or head of state—the one who holds the vision of the mission.
  2. A Soldier Has an Identity
They are marked by their allegiance to a cause. Their identity is not just by uniform but by purpose and mission.
  3. A Soldier Is Trained
No soldier goes to war unprepared. Training—sometimes painful and prolonged—is non-negotiable.
  4. A Soldier Is Disciplined
Discipline sustains identity. A soldier cannot afford to live carelessly or make decisions that compromise the mission.
  5. A Soldier Is Always on Assignment
There is always a post to report to, a duty to fulfill, a mission to complete. No idle soldier exists in the barracks.

So, if you claim to be a Christian, yet you:

  • Don’t know that you’ve enlisted to die—to lay down your life for a Kingdom, for a King you’re meant to love even more than life itself…
  • Don’t identify with the cause of Christ and lack the understanding of who you are in Him…
  • Have refused to be trained and taught to maturity…
  • Reject discipline, either from God or from spiritual leadership…
  • Aren’t conscious of your assignment or think your faith journey is just about receiving blessings (marriage, visas, contracts, children)…

Then, dear one, you are deluded.

You may wear the badge of “Christian,” but heaven does not recognize your enlistment. You are a soldier in name only—not an active citizen or ambassador of heaven. Christianity is not a luxury cruise or a golden ticket to an easier life—it is war.

The War Has Begun.

The Trumpet Is Blowing.

Brace up, Christian Soldier. The Commander is watching.
