Nigeria is set to host the highly anticipated 2025 Destination Nigeria Governors’ Tourism Conference (DNGTC) in Abuja, a landmark event aimed at boosting the country’s tourism sector as a major engine for economic growth and job creation.

The announcement was made during a press briefing at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, where the Convener of the event, Ambassador Ayo Omotoso, revealed that the conference will take place from August 25 to 26, 2025, at the Ladi Kwali Conference Centre, Abuja Continental Hotel.

With the theme, “Harnessing Tourism: A Strategic Pathway for Nigerian Governors to Foster Economic Growth and Employment,” the conference will gather state governors, cultural ambassadors, tourism stakeholders, and international investors. Discussions will centre on how tourism can be harnessed to drive inclusive economic transformation, promote cultural heritage, and create sustainable jobs across the country.

Ambassador Omotoso emphasized the vast opportunities within Nigeria’s tourism landscape, referencing the successes of other African countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and South Africa that have significantly grown their economies through strategic tourism development. He noted that Nigeria, with over 45 scenic waterfalls, a variety of festivals, and rich cultural traditions, has untapped potential in tourism.

“Each state in Nigeria has unique tourism assets that can drive revenue and development if strategically promoted,” he said. “Tourism, if properly harnessed, can become a reliable source of internally generated revenue and sustainable livelihoods for our people.”

The two-day event will feature:

  • State cultural showcases and performances
  • Creative economy and digital innovation exhibitions
  • Pan-African and local tourism investment forums
  • Nigerian fashion and craft displays
  • Executive dialogues on tourism policy
  • Climate change and infrastructure development discussions
  • Nigeria Sustainable Tourism Awards
  • A Destination Security and Peace Forum

According to the organizers, the conference aims to position tourism as a tool for national unity, peacebuilding, and social cohesion while placing Nigeria prominently on the global tourism map.

Describing the DNGTC as a “forward-thinking and resilient platform,” Omotoso called for collaboration among stakeholders in both public and private sectors.

“Let us come together to rediscover the beauty of Nigeria, celebrate our cultural wealth, and build a thriving, inclusive tourism industry that truly represents the soul of our nation,” he urged.

With an impressive lineup of participants and a robust agenda, the 2025 DNGTC is poised to be a defining moment in Nigeria’s tourism development journey.
