The Nigerian Police Force has returned a pair of AI-enabled Ray-Ban eyeglasses belonging to human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore. The glasses were stolen during a protest organized by retired police officers at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Sowore confirmed the return of the glasses on Tuesday via his social media accounts, stating, “Today, the Nigeria Police Force returned my stolen Ray-Ban Meta eyeglasses, which were taken by the National Thief, Aku Victor Chiemerie.”

The police acknowledged that the glasses were indeed stolen. The incident occurred during a peaceful demonstration on July 21, 2025, when Sowore, alongside other activists and retired officers, protested for improved welfare and retirement benefits for police personnel.

Video footage circulated online showed the culprit, Aku Victor Chiemerie — a cameraman attached to the Force Public Relations Office — forcibly taking Sowore’s smart glasses. These glasses are notable not only for their medical utility but also for their embedded artificial intelligence technology, which contains sensitive personal data.

Following the theft, Sowore filed formal complaints with the Force Criminal Investigation Department and the Asokoro Divisional Police Station. He also called on the police to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident.

Despite the thief deactivating his social media accounts, Sowore vowed to ensure accountability. “No amount of hiding, deleting, or shielding will protect him from full accountability for his actions,” Sowore said.

This development marks a significant step in the pursuit of justice for the theft of high-tech equipment during what was meant to be a peaceful protest demanding police reforms.
