To die to self means more than giving up bad habits — it’s the deliberate surrender of your own will, ambitions, and preferences so that God’s will becomes your will.
It’s the crucifixion of the flesh — silencing selfish desires so you can take up God’s desires, tastes, and priorities.
It’s learning to think as God thinks, to see as He sees, and to want what He wants — until obedience is no longer a struggle but a joy.
It’s loving God above yourself.
It’s loving Life (for God is Life), even if it means losing your own life in the process.
It’s recognizing that God’s kingdom is real — with its own government, order, and economy — and that you, as a citizen of Heaven, are called to rule and influence the Earth on His behalf.
It’s understanding that when we pray, “Let Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven,” we are not reciting poetry — we are inviting Heaven’s order, justice, and righteousness to take over our surroundings.
So why do people long for “Heaven on Earth”? Maybe because deep inside, we know the world is broken and we ache for the peace, beauty, and authority of God’s reign.
Here’s the hard truth:
We don’t fast to get a baby.
We don’t fast for a visa.
We don’t fast for business contracts.
We don’t fast for money.
We fast to know God’s will — and to do it, allow it, and enforce it where we live.
If your fasting, self-denial, or sacrifices are not ultimately for God to have His way in:
- Your life
- Your denomination
- Your country or region
- Your family
…then you are missing the point.
It’s not about you.
It’s all about God in these four spheres.
