Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – June 5, 2025 — The African Union (AU) on Thursday voiced strong concern over the United States government’s recent decision to impose a travel ban affecting seven countries on the African continent, warning of the far-reaching consequences such a move could have on diplomatic and socio-economic relations.

In an official statement released by the AU Commission, the continental body emphasized its unease over the potential fallout from the policy, particularly its impact on long-standing connections between the people of Africa and the United States.

“The Commission remains concerned about the potential negative impact of such measures on people-to-people ties, educational exchange, commercial engagement, and the broader diplomatic relations that have been carefully nurtured over decades,” the AU said.

While the statement did not specify the countries affected, diplomatic sources indicate the ban includes several key nations in both East and West Africa, raising alarms over the future of bilateral cooperation in areas such as health, trade, technology, and security.

The AU urged the United States to reconsider the decision, calling for greater dialogue and engagement rather than isolation. “This policy risks undermining mutual trust and reversing years of collaboration on critical issues ranging from peacekeeping to economic development,” the AU added.

Observers note that the timing of the ban could further strain U.S.-Africa relations at a time when both sides are seeking to deepen ties amid shifting global alliances and growing interest in Africa’s strategic importance.

Civil society groups, academic institutions, and members of the African diaspora have also begun voicing their opposition to the travel restrictions, citing concerns about discrimination, reduced educational opportunities, and harm to family reunification efforts.

The AU concluded its statement by reaffirming its commitment to fostering respectful and cooperative international partnerships, and called on the U.S. administration to engage with African leaders to resolve the matter through constructive diplomacy.
