The Nigerian Army’s 82 Division has opened an investigation into a viral incident in which soldiers allegedly forced a civilian motorist to swim in a filthy pool of water along the Nsukka–Igbo Eze South Road in Enugu State.
A disturbing video circulating on social media shows the man—reportedly a driver—being punished after accidentally splashing water on a soldier during a routine security stop in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area.

In a statement on Tuesday, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, confirmed the incident occurred during a checkpoint operation. While stressing the importance of such security checks, Ayeni noted that the Army takes allegations of misconduct seriously.
“A thorough investigation has been instituted to determine the facts, and the findings will be made public. If the personnel are found guilty, appropriate disciplinary measures will be applied in line with military regulations,” Ayeni said.
The Army spokesperson reaffirmed the division’s commitment to professionalism, adherence to the Rules of Engagement, and maintaining positive civil-military relations, adding that public vigilance and media oversight are appreciated.
The Nsukka–Igbo Eze South area has seen increased military presence in recent years due to security challenges, including armed attacks, kidnappings, and clashes with criminal gangs. However, human rights groups have repeatedly called for stronger oversight to prevent abuse of civilians at military checkpoints.
