Former Labour Party (LP) vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has dismissed the newly formed opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a deception that cannot provide the solutions Nigerians need.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Baba-Ahmed, who ran alongside Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election, said he remains committed to Obi and would be willing to serve as his running mate again in 2027.

“They are deceiving us,” he said, referring to the ADC alliance that has drawn support from politicians such as David Mark, Atiku Abubakar, Nasir el-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi and Rauf Aregbesola.

While Obi has shown interest in aligning with the coalition, Baba-Ahmed urged him to stay in the Labour Party and lead its ticket in the next election. “I’m in the Labour Party. I’m a Peter Obi man. I still want Peter Obi to come back to the Labour Party and contest the 2027 election,” he stated.

Asked if he would consider being a running mate again, Baba-Ahmed responded:
“If Nigeria is still around and there is an electoral system to follow. My love for Nigeria is undying, and I would appropriately associate with like-minded groups and individuals to restore Nigeria.”

He added that there are only two people he would agree to deputise, noting, “The first one has not said anything. The second one is Peter Obi. I’m always with Peter Obi until he decides not to.”

Baba-Ahmed’s remarks come as political alignments intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with Obi yet to formally declare his platform of choice.
