The Republic of Benin today marked its 65th Independence Anniversary with nationwide celebrations, parades, and reflective speeches highlighting the nation’s journey since gaining freedom from French colonial rule on August 1, 1960.

In Cotonou, President Patrice Talon led a solemn but colorful celebration at the Place des Martyrs, where the national flag was hoisted amid the singing of the national anthem and a military parade showcasing the strength and discipline of the country’s armed forces.

Delivering his Independence Day address, President Talon reaffirmed his government’s commitment to deepening democracy, promoting economic growth, and tackling insecurity. He called on citizens to remain united in the face of challenges and to continue building a prosperous and inclusive Benin.

“Today is a moment of pride for all Beninese people. It is a time to remember our heroes, reflect on our progress, and renew our collective resolve to build a future worthy of our founding values — liberty, justice, and solidarity,” President Talon said.

Special attention this year was given to youth empowerment and innovation, with the unveiling of a new national digital training initiative aimed at equipping young people with tech and entrepreneurship skills.

Across the country, cultural events, music performances, and interfaith prayers were held. In Parakou, Porto-Novo, and Abomey, traditional rulers and community leaders joined local festivities, emphasizing the importance of cultural heritage and national unity.

Many citizens took to the streets waving flags and dressed in national colors — green, red, and yellow — to celebrate the occasion.

Benin, a small West African nation, has gained regional recognition in recent years for its relative political stability and reforms in public finance and governance. However, it still faces social challenges, including unemployment and access to basic infrastructure in rural areas.

As the country steps into its 66th year of independence, many are hopeful that ongoing reforms and public participation will sustain Benin’s democratic gains and pave the way for long-term prosperity.
