Cameroonian opposition leader, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, has accused President Paul Biya’s government of orchestrating a campaign of repression and abductions following the disputed October 12 presidential election.

In a statement issued on Friday, Tchiroma alleged that two of his family members and his personal chef were abducted in Garoua on Wednesday night, describing the incident as part of a wider effort to intimidate opposition figures and silence dissent.

“It looks like an open war against the Cameroonian people. They spare nothing — assassinations, repression, and other abuses,” Tchiroma said. “Yesterday, they kidnapped two members of my family and my personal cook. Do you think you can pressure me with such acts? I demand their immediate release and that of all others who have been arbitrarily detained.”

The opposition leader, who claims victory in the election, vowed that the attacks and arrests would not deter him from seeking justice. He urged his supporters to remain steadfast amid what he described as escalating state violence.

Later on Friday, Tchiroma announced that he had left his residence in Garoua and was now under the protection of what he called “elements of the loyalist army.” He expressed gratitude to soldiers who, according to him, ensured his safety.

“I thank the loyalist army, which has shown its patriotism by escorting me to a safe location and ensuring my protection,” he said, promising to deliver a formal address soon.

Tchiroma reiterated his commitment to challenging the government’s legitimacy and called on citizens to resist intimidation. “To all those who have been arrested or kidnapped, hold on — I will not rest until this regime yields to the will of the people,” he declared.

The Cameroonian government has yet to respond to the allegations.
