The Dangote Group has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Ruth Otabor, younger sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Josephine Otabor, popularly known as Phyna.
Ruth, a recent graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, died weeks after sustaining severe injuries in a road accident involving a Dangote truck in Auchi, Edo State, on August 13, 2025. The accident led to the amputation of one of her legs and left her battling for her life until her passing on Sunday, August 31, at about 6:30 a.m.
In a statement released the same day, the Dangote Group said it had been providing full medical and financial support to Ruth and her family since the incident. The company added that arrangements were already in place to fly her to India for advanced treatment, pending medical clearance.
“On behalf of the entire Dangote Group, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time,” the statement read. “Despite all efforts and Ruth’s brave fight to survive, we sadly lost her today. May God grant her mercy and eternal rest.”
The company further stressed that safety, accountability, and compassion remain central to its operations and pledged to continue strengthening its safety systems to prevent future tragedies.
The Otabor family, represented by Eko Solicitors & Advocates, also confirmed Ruth’s passing in a public announcement. They requested privacy as they grieve their daughter, sister, and mother, noting that funeral arrangements will be communicated later.
Ruth’s death comes after Phyna took to social media last week, expressing outrage over the circumstances of the accident and accusing the Dangote Group of shielding those responsible. The reality TV star had appealed to the public and directly to Aliko Dangote, lamenting her sister’s condition after the crash.
