The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released former Sokoto State governor and serving senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, hours after interrogating him in Abuja over an alleged ₦189 billion fraud.

Tambuwal, who represents the Sokoto South Senatorial District, was seen in photos shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, sparking mixed reactions from both supporters and critics. One supporter, Emma Umeh, wrote: “Sen Tambuwal is back home. Thank you Nigerians for standing against the oppression of the APC.”
Sources revealed that Tambuwal honoured the EFCC’s invitation on Monday, arriving at the agency’s Jabi headquarters around 11:30 a.m., where he was questioned over massive cash withdrawals allegedly made in breach of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. The transactions in question reportedly span several years of his eight-year tenure as governor (2015–2023) and involve multiple state accounts.
The EFCC is said to be probing suspicious financial activities running into hundreds of billions of naira, with investigators still reviewing documents and statements. His release, sources confirmed, does not mark the end of the investigation, as the senator is expected to be recalled for further questioning.
The case has reignited debates over selective prosecution in Nigeria’s anti-corruption fight, with some analysts accusing the EFCC of shielding certain political figures while targeting others.
