The Ekiti State Government has disbursed ₦2 billion to 800 retirees as part of ongoing efforts to clear outstanding gratuities and improve the welfare of senior citizens in the state.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji, represented by his deputy, Mrs. Monisade Afuye, announced this on Monday in Ado-Ekiti, reiterating his administration’s commitment to easing the plight of pensioners.
According to the governor, the latest payment brings total gratuity disbursements to ₦9.6 billion since he assumed office in October 2022, while ₦25.9 billion has been released as pension payments within the same period.
“As a son of a retired teacher, I understand the anxiety that comes with retirement. One of my greatest joys as governor is being in a position to wipe away the tears of our elderly citizens,” Oyebanji said.
He added that his government would continue monthly releases of ₦100 million for gratuity payments, assuring that retirees from 2013 to 2016 have now been fully paid.
The governor also approved an upward review of monthly pension by ₦20 million across all categories to enhance the welfare of pensioners.
Ekiti’s Head of Service, Dr. Folakemi Olomojobi, lauded the gesture, describing it as “historic and compassionate,” noting that it reflects the governor’s resolve to prioritize human welfare over politics.
“Governor Oyebanji has paid ₦25 billion in pensions, ₦9.6 billion in gratuities for state retirees, and ₦3 billion for local government staff — a cumulative ₦14.6 billion in just three years,” Olomojobi stated.
Some beneficiaries, including Mr. Oladapo Akinola and Mrs. Adejoke Omoseebi, praised the initiative, describing it as a “third-year anniversary gift” to pensioners and a testament to the governor’s empathy for senior citizens.
