Billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has once again waded into America’s culture wars, urging his 227 million followers on X (formerly Twitter) to cancel their Netflix subscriptions.
Musk’s call followed a campaign led by far-right account Libs of TikTok, which accused Netflix of “indoctrination” through its diversity policies and animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park.
In response to the post, Musk wrote bluntly: “Cancel Netflix.” He later reinforced his stance, adding: “Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids.”
The controversy deepened when conservatives resurfaced old social media posts by the show’s creator, Hamish Steele, allegedly containing offensive comments about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Steele denied the claims, describing them as “lies and slander” in a now-deleted Bluesky post.
The backlash has spilled into financial markets. Netflix shares fell by 2% on Wednesday and dropped another 2% on Thursday, wiping billions from the company’s market value.
Musk’s criticism is also seen as personal. In 2022, his eldest daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, publicly transitioned and legally cut ties with him. Since then, Musk has frequently claimed that his child was “killed” by what he calls the “woke mind virus” promoted in elite schools.
With his latest intervention, the Tesla and SpaceX boss has further cemented his role as a leading figure in the cultural battles raging across the U.S., regularly leveraging his massive online following to amplify conservative talking points and attack what he describes as “woke ideology.”
