Coronation rites completed at Ose Meji Temple ahead of Mapo Hall staff of office ceremony.
Former Oyo State Governor, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has officially been crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland in a colourful and historic traditional ceremony.
The coronation rites began with the presentation of the symbolic Akoko leaf at the Labosinde Compound in Oja’ba, signifying his formal induction into the revered line of Olubadan rulers. The process continued at the sacred Ose Meji Temple in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area, where the coronation was formally completed.
The final stage of the ceremonies — the official presentation of the staff and instrument of office — is scheduled to be performed by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, at the historic Mapo Hall, which will officially seal Oba Ladoja’s transition into his royal role.
Governor Makinde, who had been on leave since August 29, 2025, cut his vacation short to personally attend and supervise the coronation. His letter of resumption was read at the Oyo State House of Assembly’s Thursday plenary session by Deputy Speaker Muhammad Abiodun Fadeyi, who stood in for Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin.
In the correspondence, the governor explained that the cultural and historical significance of the Olubadan’s coronation necessitated his early return to duty. He also commended his deputy, Barr. Bayo Lawal, for effectively serving as acting governor during his absence.
Oba Rashidi Ladoja, a seasoned politician and respected elder statesman, served as Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2007. His administration was notable for reforms in education, infrastructure, and civil service. Despite political turbulence, including an impeachment later overturned by the courts, he remained a key figure in Oyo State politics and is widely regarded as a unifying force.
With his coronation, Oba Ladoja now assumes the position of paramount ruler of Ibadanland, taking on the responsibility of guiding the city’s traditional council and preserving its cultural heritage.
