Sections of the newly constructed Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway are already under threat due to serious flooding, allegedly caused by inadequate drainage infrastructure.
In a video obtained online, a concerned Nigerian citizen captured footage of floodwaters encroaching on parts of the road, especially behind Chartered House along Ogombo Road in Ajah, near Landmark Estate and Laredia Boulevard. The individual expressed alarm at the situation and questioned why proper drainage was not installed in the area.
“This is going to be a big problem,” the narrator warned. “I just want to show what’s happening. Engineers need to come down here and fix this. It’s not just in one place; it’s happening along several sections of the road.”
He called on the Nigerian government and the contractors responsible for the project to take urgent corrective action before the issue escalates into a major structural and safety concern.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project, a flagship infrastructure initiative expected to stretch over 700 kilometers and boost economic connectivity along Nigeria’s coastline, has come under scrutiny for its high cost and potential environmental impact. This latest development has added to growing concerns about the quality and long-term sustainability of the project.
The video clip, which has since gone viral on social media, shows visible flooding at multiple points, suggesting that poor planning or lack of effective drainage design could be undermining the integrity of the multibillion-naira highway.
Public calls are intensifying for oversight agencies and project engineers to investigate and address the flooding before it leads to more severe damage.
