G7 Backs Israel’s Right to Self-Defense, Calls for Ceasefire Amid Escalating Iran Conflict

Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) have issued a unified statement expressing strong support for Israel’s right to defend itself, while also calling for an immediate de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza.

“We affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel,” the statement reads.

The G7 leaders—gathered at a summit in Canada—also stressed the urgent need to protect civilians on all sides and prevent further escalation as tensions between Iran and Israel continue to rise. The conflict has already resulted in heavy casualties, with reports indicating at least 224 people killed in Iran and 24 in Israel.

U.S. President Donald Trump, attending the summit, announced he would leave early due to the rapidly evolving situation. “Because of what’s going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Trump has instructed the U.S. National Security Council to prepare for a high-level meeting at the White House Situation Room. He also called on Iran to enter negotiations, warning, “Iran is not winning this war, and they should talk… before it’s too late.” He reaffirmed his stance on nuclear weapons, declaring, “IRAN CANNOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON.”

Other G7 leaders echoed the call for calm. French President Emmanuel Macron said, “If the United States can achieve a ceasefire, that’s a very good thing,” while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer noted a “consensus for de-escalation” among world leaders.

As the conflict threatens to engulf the wider region, international actors including China and Turkey have also urged restraint and pushed for diplomatic solutions. The G7’s joint statement reflects growing global concern and a collective appeal for peace in a region on the brink.
