Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has strongly criticised governorship candidates from Anambra South promising to serve only one term, describing such pledges as deceptive and indicative of poor mental judgment.

Speaking during a political rally in Anambra South where he received endorsements for a second term, Soludo condemned attempts to undermine the state’s power rotation agreement. He reaffirmed that the zoning system dictates that after his expected eight-year tenure, the governorship should shift to Anambra Central.
Soludo dismissed one-term pledges as political gimmicks, accusing such candidates of trying to manipulate the electorate. “Any politician who says they will only serve one term should undergo psychiatric evaluation,” he said. “Why would anyone promise four years when the constitution allows eight? It’s an insult to the intelligence of Ndi Anambra.”
The governor expressed concern over attempts by some aspirants to violate the zoning arrangement for selfish political interests, warning that such moves could disrupt the state’s political stability. He insisted that Anambra has advanced politically and intellectually and should not entertain mediocrity.
“There are certain calibres of people we can no longer consider for leadership in Anambra,” Soludo declared. “People who parade questionable academic credentials or lack proper education have no business aspiring to govern this state. Some don’t even have valid school certificates, yet they want to lead a state that produced icons like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, and Chinua Achebe.”
Soludo stressed that the people of Anambra deserve competent, visionary leaders—not opportunists exploiting populist narratives. “Anambra has no place for street urchins or pretenders. We have moved past that,” he said.
His comments come amid growing political activity ahead of the next governorship election in the state, with debates intensifying over zoning, qualifications, and the credibility of candidates.
