“I’m Still Trying to Understand the ADC,” Says Datti Baba-Ahmed, Questions Coalition Backed by Atiku and Peter Obi

Labour Party’s 2023 Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has cast doubt on the credibility and clarity of the coalition recently endorsed by former presidential hopefuls Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, questioning the role of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the alliance.

“Quite frankly, I am still trying to understand the ADC. I am still trying to understand it. So I cannot tell you much about ADC,” Baba-Ahmed said during an appearance on a Channels Television programme.

He accompanied his comments with a warning:

“A word of advice—never believe what the APC says.”

Dr. Baba-Ahmed’s remarks come amid growing political realignments and the announcement of a coalition that includes the ADC, a party reportedly selected as the vehicle for a unified opposition against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Despite being involved in preliminary coalition talks, Baba-Ahmed emphasized his loyalty to the Labour Party and his ongoing efforts to unify its leadership.

“Labour Party is not a party to walk away from. The successes, the history that Labour Party of Nigeria has recorded is unique and unprecedented,” he stated.

Reflecting on the outcome of the 2023 elections, he noted:

“We presented clear records and evidence of 10 million votes scored in the last election, thereafter reduced to 6.1 million votes. The act of state capture is a more onerous task causing disunity and disaffection within political parties.”

The former vice presidential candidate also explained the motive behind his recent meeting with the factional chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure.

“I visited the Abure-led faction of the Labour Party to reconcile divergent opinions,” he explained.

On his participation in coalition talks, Baba-Ahmed clarified:

“I’m very proud to say that I did attend meetings of a certain attempt for a coalition in Nigeria. Morally speaking, if your neighbourhood invites you to discuss security, you must attend. However, if you attend and they discuss other matters besides that, you are at liberty to restore yourself to your former position.”

His comments further deepened the uncertainty surrounding the current political stance of Peter Obi, his 2023 presidential running mate. While Obi has yet to make a formal declaration about his alignment with the ADC coalition, observers are watching closely to see whether he will maintain his footing in the Labour Party or chart a new path.

Meanwhile, the ADC and its coalition partners have vowed to build a broad opposition alliance with the aim of unseating President Tinubu in the next general election.
