An awaiting trial inmate, identified as Dung Bulus Pam, has reportedly died overnight at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja from an undisclosed ailment.
Sources within the facility said the deceased was remanded by the same police prosecutor, Musa Adama, who also arraigned 13 protesters from the recent #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration, including human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Barr. Aloy Ejimakor.
According to insiders, Adama has gained notoriety for allegedly framing vulnerable Nigerians and sending them to prison without trial for years. “Several of them never get justice. One of them died today,” a prison source lamented.
Ejimakor, who was reportedly assaulted and arrested by police during last Monday’s peaceful protest in Abuja, is said to be in critical condition at the Kuje Prison Clinic. His counsel, Barr. Maxwell Opara, confirmed that his client was still receiving medical attention with a neck brace fixed by prison medics.
Ejimakor had taken ill barely 24 hours after a Senior Magistrate, Abubakar Umar Sai’id, refused to sign his bail bond despite granting him and others bail. Reports also indicate that the lawyer had been denied access to his legal team during scheduled visits.
Eyewitnesses recalled that Ejimakor and 12 others—including Prince Emmanuel Kanu, younger brother to the detained IPOB leader—were tear-gassed, beaten, and detained at the notorious SARS “Abattoir” facility before being transferred to the Kuje Magistrate Court, where they were summarily remanded.
On Friday, Sowore was also arraigned alongside Ejimakor and the other protesters. Although the court approved bail for all defendants, the magistrate allegedly failed to endorse the bond, leaving them in custody.
As of Monday morning, sources said Ejimakor’s condition had worsened, and he remains under close observation at the Kuje Prison Clinic, where the deceased inmate was also admitted before his death.
