Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a public holiday in commemoration of the annual Isese Day, dedicated to celebrating Yoruba culture, tradition, and spirituality.

The announcement was contained in a circular signed by the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, and distributed to ministries, departments, agencies, and local councils across the state on Monday, August 18.

According to the circular, the work-free day underscores the government’s commitment to promoting indigenous culture, preserving heritage, and supporting traditional institutions in the state.

Isese, a Yoruba word meaning “tradition” or “ancestral customs,” is widely associated with the practice of the indigenous Yoruba religion and traditional values passed down through generations.

“It is hereby notified for general information that this year’s Isese Day Celebration will hold on Wednesday, 20th August, 2025,” the circular stated. “In reaffirming the commitment of the State Government towards promoting our indigenous culture, tradition, and preserving our heritage, Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has declared Wednesday, 20th August, 2025 as a Work-Free Day for Lagos State Public Servants in commemoration of the Day.”

The circular further directed all accounting officers to ensure wide dissemination of the information across government offices. Work is expected to resume on Thursday, August 21, at 8:00 a.m.

Isese Day, now officially recognized in Lagos and other southwestern states, continues to gain prominence as a cultural holiday aimed at fostering inclusivity and celebrating Yoruba identity.
