Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that Lagos will host the prestigious E1 Racing Championship in October 2025, making it the first African city to do so.
The Governor made this historic announcement via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle following his recent visit to Monaco, where he attended the current season of the E1 Championship. The international racing event is renowned as the world’s first and only all-electric powerboat series, designed to promote clean energy and sustainable marine innovation.

Reflecting on the experience in Monaco, Sanwo-Olu wrote:
“It was a good reminder of how innovation, determination, and bold ideas can come together to create something truly groundbreaking.”
He disclosed that Lagos will host the event on October 4th and 5th, 2025, describing it as a “major milestone” both for the sport and for Lagos.
“It shows that Lagos is ready to be part of the global conversation on clean energy, sustainability, and new approaches to marine transportation,” he said.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the event is not just about racing, but about showcasing the city’s vibrancy, resilience, and potential on the global stage.
“This is an opportunity to show the world what makes Lagos special — our culture, our energy, and our people. It’s a chance to welcome visitors, share our stories, and highlight the incredible potential of our city,” he added.
He also thanked the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) for supporting the initiative, particularly for its backing of Team Drogba, one of the competing teams, and for believing in Lagos’ vision.
Concluding, the Governor said,
“We’re bringing a world-class sporting event to our shores. This marks a new chapter for Lagos, and I can’t wait for the world to see what we have to offer.”
The E1 Championship is widely recognized for advancing sustainable marine technology and is expected to draw global attention to Lagos as a hub for innovation and green development.
