Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has emphasized that the forthcoming national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must be conducted with fairness, inclusivity, and open dialogue to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Makinde, in a statement released on Thursday, noted that the success of the November 15–16 elective convention in Ibadan depends on transparent processes that reflect democratic values. At the convention, 19 new members of the National Working Committee will be elected.
The governor recalled that the party’s 101st National Executive Committee meeting in July resolved to use the convention as a platform for restructuring and rebuilding the PDP.
Citing the recent rancour-free congress of the PDP in Oyo State as an example, Makinde expressed optimism that the Ibadan convention could set a new standard for the party.
“The recent PDP congress in Oyo was peaceful, and it gives us hope as we prepare for the convention in November,” he said. “A process built on fairness, inclusivity, and respect will strengthen our unity and show that politics can be dignified. It proves disagreements can be managed without disunity, and ambition can fuel progress rather than conflict.”
The governor stressed that the outcome of the convention would not only shape the PDP’s internal structure but also project the party as a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political space.
