A review of public expenditure records has revealed that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) spent a staggering ₦59.4 million within eight months on the production of towels branded with the insignia of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun.

The revelation comes from Govspend, Nigeria’s public accountability platform that tracks federal disbursements. The data shows that between April and November 2024, multiple payments were made to private contractors for the supply of IGP-branded towels, which were distributed across police commands and formations nationwide.

Breakdown of Payments

  • April 30, 2024: ₦8.4 million was paid to Oran Global Investment Ltd. for 780 IGP-customised towels and other items.
  • April 30, 2024: ₦8.5 million was paid to Chumchuks Investment Ltd. for 700 towels.
  • April 30, 2024: ₦8.6 million was paid to Waves Fillment Ltd. for 640 towels.
  • April 30, 2024: ₦8.7 million was again paid to Oran Global Investment Ltd. for 920 towels.
  • November 14, 2024: ₦8.7 million was paid to Oran Global Investment Ltd. for 800 towels.
  • November 14, 2024: ₦7.9 million was paid for 700 towels.
  • November 14, 2024: ₦8.6 million was paid for an undisclosed quantity of towels and items for distribution.

Altogether, these transactions amount to ₦59.4 million in less than a year, raising concerns over procurement priorities and spending patterns in the force.

Crackers Worth Over ₦22 Million

This is not the first time NPF expenditures have sparked public debate. In a previous review of the same platform, it was revealed that the police spent ₦22.28 million on just 85 cartons of Cream Crackers biscuits between August and October 2023 — an average cost of ₦261,717 per carton.

Payments were made as follows:

  • October 26, 2023: ₦7.07 million for 25 cartons for logistics and consumables during discreet security operations.
  • October 4, 2023: ₦7.07 million for 30 cartons for operations in Taraba State.
  • August 30, 2023: ₦8.13 million for 30 cartons for operations in Yobe State.

The high unit cost of the biscuits and the massive spending on branded towels have fueled criticism that the police leadership may be prioritizing symbolic items over pressing operational needs such as equipment, training, and welfare of rank-and-file officers.

Neither the Nigeria Police Force nor IGP Kayode Egbetokun has issued a public statement addressing these expenditures.
